Noche de Ciencias

Science is too wonderful for it to be exclusive and too important to leave anyone out. This is why SHPE continues to offer our signature program, Noche de Ciencias, for students and their parents.

These local family science nights are designed to inspire students to pursue STEM careers, while also educating their parents on ways to support their child’s goals. Each event offers interactive STEM activities where students can learn about STEM majors and careers from current university students and industry professionals. At the same time, parents are engaged in bilingual workshops where they are introduced to STEM, college options, financial aid, and next-steps preparation for higher education.

Ultimately, this event introduces future leaders to the SHPE Familia. We help both students and parents understand that a future in STEM is possible and that they don’t have to do it alone. Over 1,000 SHPE members volunteered over 80,000 hours at Noche de Ciencias across the nation last year. Each one is a testament to the power of SHPE’s network and the success we can achieve together.

DURING THE 2018-2019 ACADEMIC YEAR, NEARLY 2,500 HISPANIC YOUTH PARTICIPATED IN THESE EVENTS, AND MORE THAN 500 PARENTS RECEIVED INFORMATION ABOUT ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL PURSUITS IN STEM.

The impact of this program is clear: During the 2018-19 academic year, over 2,500 Hispanic youth participated in these events, and more than 500 parents received information about academic and professional pursuits in STEM. We are making real gains for college readiness and Hispanic youths’ pursuit of STEM, strengthening not just the future of the SHPE Familia, but the future of the American workforce.

“Every Noche de Ciencias event, whether it’s a junior chapter general meeting, a college tour, or any excursion, gives you a chance to learn a little bit more about yourself and shows you how to interact with STEM activities. You learn how to become more involved and you get to interact with STEM professionals and mentors through SHPE Noche de Ciencias community outreach programs. I really enjoy participating.”
